There is something peaceful about Sunday mornings for me. The newspaper with a fresh cup of coffee - my dog Frank laying across the back cushion of the couch and snoring in my ear - and watching my recording of "House Wifes of New Jersey". What a great way to start my day! One of those crazy things that you love to do but you aren't sure if you want anyone to know that you do it -for me it is the House Wifes shows. I admit, I like the New Jersey girls and some of the New York gals - but that is it. They have some really crazy girls with crazy lives. Reminds me of how boring and pathetic I wish to remain! Now if someone would like to video tape me and my peeps spending a day around a friends dining room table, sewing machines roaring, diet coke being slurpped, laughter and reckless behavior - come on over. I am sure we could sell it to the DIY network and quilters-crafters everywhere would envy us!!!!! Now that is reality TV.

So for today, I am heading outside to dead head a few flowers and to clean the patio doors, then head downstairs to try to make a path into my sewing room. I have got to have a bit more order in my life - there are too many things out of my control and it makes me useless. Must be productive! later, Kaye

A very bittersweet day at the shop as we closed her down. We had many visitors stopping by to wish us all well and one of our favorite customers - Saundra - came by and bought every last thread of fabric - we love Saundra. I thought she and Zephie needed their picture taken.

With the help of many friends and my children, we have cleaned up the shop. The building has been sold and should close in a few weeks. How grateful am I that the buyers wanted the fixtures. I have kept very busy trying to figure out what to do first. Someday I will be able to sew.

Mary, Zephie and I did go on Shop Hop last Friday. We managed to make it to 8 shops - and a great time was had by all. It was fun to see it from a shoppers view, but only a few of them measured up to what we have done in the past!!! I do however, question Mary's driving. Like the bumper sticker reads - "I have brakes but I don't use them!"

Fathers Day was spent with my children and 2 lovely granddaughters. We got in a quick game of Scattergories while barbecuing - dinner was yummy! I even made a lemon creme pie!

If you have waited until this week - as I have - to find a few flowers for your planters, then you know what I mean when I say slim pickins! I wanted just a little bit of color by the front door and a bit on the patio. Zephie stopped by with a grape tomato plant on Tuesday, so I finished planting my garden that night - yes it was dark and I needed the flash! I hope it will grow with my last two flower plants in with it - proven winners - we'll see!

Today, I cleaned my carpets - UGH! Well at least I tried. Somethings just don't clean up like we want them too. Then I thought I would use the hand scrubbing tool to clean my car seats - what a mistake that was. They honestly look worse - its' time for seat covers in the old VW.

So as you can see - I really have kept busy - but I have got to settle down and get to work on the Gammill. After my hair cut tomorrow, I am going to find some lights that will be installed over the machine. Then the machine quilting will begin.

Its' hard to believe, but this coming Saturday, June 12th, will be the last business day for Red Rooster Q & T. uncertainty

That seems to be my word for the day - uncertainty. I know it has different meaning for each of us, but for today it really seems to define alot of things going on right now. Time marches on and it seems to be marching across my face. Words similar to those were spoken somewhere by Dolly Parton and I always liked that phrase. But the combat boots are killing me!!!!!!!!
So while I was working on Quick books this afternoon, I had my itunes playing on the computer - the music seems to help my brain. But I have not enjoyed the Christmas tunes that I have been listening to since I don't know how to separate my play lists. I will have to find a friend who will give me another lesson. Don't you just love smart friends!

Well I should head home to feed Frank and be his support system while he sleeps on the couch. Eyes too tired for much of anything tonight. But I will be here all by myself tomorrow - Zephie has Quilting Coven - I love their name. (have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas is playing now-yuk)

Memorial Day 2010

I thought I would share a little family history with you - if you have ever been through the Logan Utah cemetery , you may have come across the weeping woman. Her name was Julia and she was my great grandmother. She was born in 1859 and died and 1914 - only 55 years old. The story I had been told was that she lost 4 children in 1901- influenza ? - and was broken hearted.

I don't know who gave her the scarf and flower - many people come by to look at her - I talked to 3 different ladies on Mon. that were checking her out. Great grandmothers head stone.

Behind her monument is a grave where two of her daughters are buried together as they had died within a week of each other. The oldest was Emilia - she was born in 1895 and died in 1901. The younger one is Inez - born 1899 and died 1901. I don't know where the 2 boys are buried that died that same year. My grandmother, Margaret was older and didn't get as sick as the little ones.

This is a beautiful photograph that was done of Emilia and Inez just months before they died. This is hanging over my headboard and it really is wonderful. I am so fortunate to be the proud owner. Just think of how difficult those times were - I am so grateful to be living in a more modern world, but it too is filled with trials.

My father and 2 of my uncles served in WWII. My mothers younger brother, Lyle Hoffman, was killed in Germany. His wife Georgia was expecting there 1st baby when he went to war. He died without ever knowing his son, Lyle.
Georgia went on to marry again, had 3 more children. Her oldest daughter - who I had met in the shop - came up to me one day and asked if I was a Hoffman and I said yes - Her mom was Georgia - my uncles widow. How excited was I to finally be able to meet her. On the Saturday before Mothers Day, Georgia and her daughter - also named Georgia, and my Aunt Marj
who was married to uncle Lyle's brother, came for a cup of coffee and a great visit. Georgia and Marj are both in their 90's and doing so well. I was so excited to meet and talk with her - she was delightful. I hope someday I will be able to meet my cousin Lyle - it's never too late.

It is heart breaking to think of all the innocent lifes that are lost every day.

My mothers family has always done alot of grave decorating when I was young. We would get all dressed up and head to the cemetery and meet up with a lot of family members.

I was finally able to bury my brother this past week - it took me long enough but now it is done.

There are lots of thoughts and emotions around the shop these days as we wind down to our last final days. There is still a wee bit of fabric left and you need it much more than I do!!!

Hi my friends - I have stopped and tried to write on my blog for a couple weeks now - but I never seem to be able to get something smitten or else I start crying or just too many interruptions. So today, I decided to just say HI and let everyone know that things are starting to wind down around here. We do have a little bit of everything left - and it is all 50% OFF. There are still some ready made items that are 30% OFF. At this time, I plan on taking the quilting machine home and quiting for others. So let me know if you need my address and phone #.
As I work upstairs, I can hear Zephie downstairs telling someone about the sale and helping another customer. I have nothing but praise for her - she has been such a loyal and good employee and my friend. I have been wondering how I will start each morning without talking to her.
Do you ever feel like you have let people down - not kept up like you thought you could - and disappointed yourself as well as others in the process? I am wondering about all these things and feeling too old to change and do anything about them. Climbing into a hole seems to be the answer. Enough about me - but part of the reason I mention it is because I have had quite a few people ask me if I am going to continue to blog. Since most of what I blog about is whining - bitching and complaining - I wonder if it is worth it. Maybe now i will have some time to actually have something fun to share !! so - I guess for now I am asking you not to give up on me.

I did get to have a fun sleepover with my daughter and Lilly a week ago- so I had to post this pic of them. Winter was with 'whats his name' for the wekend. I am so serious when I tell you that Lilly is the best baby that I have ever seen!!!!!!! Must be the Neilson blood.

I am headed home to baby sit Winter tonight - I hope she wants ravioli for dinner!

Hooray Hooray - the first of May - A great BIG sale will begin today! Sadly - I must tell you all that the time has come for me to close my shop. I am so grateful for all the support from all my friends and customers. This has been a very difficult decision to make and a very emotional one too. I could go on forever about all my reasons but I won't. So for today, I just want everyone to know that we are starting a sale on May 1st - 40% off all inventory - some exclusions apply of course. You would think that by now I could remember to upload pictures in the correct order as to how they will appear on the blog - but NO - I can't. I was too busy teaching and visiting to take too many pictures. So we will start at the trunks show part of the day.....

These 3 darling girls - Rose, Michelle & LuAnn - were in my morning class "Spring Break".

All the ladies in class had great fabric chooses for these blocks and I think some of them even learned something! I had a wonderful time teaching this class.

These 2 darling girls are Deon Richards from Mantua and my crazy cousin Carole who came up from Ogden (she is the gray haired on in the front). They both enjoyed the cathedral window class in the morning and then Deon took the afternoon mystery and Carol took Sandy Workmans class in the afternoon. I didn't get any pictures in that class.

Here it is Thursday and I still haven't posted anything for over a week - naughty me. I have so many things to ramble on about and my brain is on overload anyway. I think the most important thing i need to share is how overwhelmingly fun our retreat was last Saturday. I must tell you that after all is said and done - it is worth every minute spent in preparation. I first want to give everyone a great big THANK YOU for sharing the day with us. I feel like the classes were all very successful - wonderful teachers for sure - to share their talents. The prizes were well received and of course I have to mention the good food. But of course I am always happy with a meal that I didn't have to plan, shop, prepare and clean up after !!! I truly appreciate every one's participation. I left my camera at home so I will post some pictures later.
I think it is safe to say that spring is here - so many pretty spring blooming things that I love to see - something about the beautiful bright yellows always make me happy. But - my friend has a magnolia tree in full bloom and it always snows at least once each year while the tree is in bloom - we'll see.
I am going to go home and try to put some things away in my sewing room - it is a total disaster! Later - Kaye

Happy Birthday Frank

Frank is 12 human years old today - Happy Birthday you good little weeny dog! Frank was my husbands idea. When we first moved back to Logan he informed me that he was going to find a miniature dachshund and my response was " why would anyone want one of those kind of dogs!"
As usual - Rob got what he wanted and he found Frank through a breeder in Smithfield. I have always loved dogs - especially dogs that were fluffy and had a little something you can hold to. Frank is not that dog. But, the first time I met Frank - he was about 3 weeks old and the cutest little thing I had ever seen. He was brought home on Father's Day. Frank was a faithful friend for my husband and especially during Robs' final illness, Frank was always at his side. So now I have this little dog who suffers with separation anxiety and must stay with me all day. He has been a welcome figure here at the shop and I really appreciate most every ones acceptance of him.
So now it is time for me to take Frank and drive out to my accountants office because my taxes are done!!!! Being poor is starting to agree with me - for the second year in a row I don't have to give and I won't receive! YEA!!!!!!!!
This Saturday is our retreat - we are all looking forward to the fun day! Enjoy the sunshine, Kaye

I was finally able to get the pictures on the blog of the projects being taught at our Spring Break Retreat. The Mystery class and Cathedral Window classes are now full, but we still have some room in all the others. I would love to have more of you get in on the fun!
It has been a pretty slow day here at the shop - maybe because of conference and all the happenings involving family for the Easter weekend. However you are spending you weekend - make sure it is a happy one. I am going home to make Red Velvet Cupcakes to take to dinner tomorrow - hope they turn out - new recipe! I probably shouldn't try new recipes out at gatherings but that is about the only time I do any real cooking any more - keep your fingers crossed! Have a great weekend - Kaye

Needles and Friends Road Trip

On Wednesday, March 24th, Needles and Friends Quilt Guild headed out on a road trip, organized by Angie Peterson. They met here at the shop - starting at 7 a.m. ( yip - I was up and dressed) - as they loaded Le Bus at 8 a.m. they picked up a breakfast of juice, muffins and yogurt parfaits. They were entertained while riding with stories, videos featuring them and some of their husbands, games and treats. They spent the entire day shopping at Pine Needles, Whimsey Cottage, Quilts Etc., Elaines Quilt Block, Material Girls and Whimsey Cottage. A great time was had by all! I was grateful to have been included in their day - Thank you.

What a crazy week - busy busy. I did get to cuddle up with my new grand baby for a few minutes yesterday - the feel and smell of a new baby is the best - I am still amazed at the miracle of it all. I could go on about how I would like to freeze time for a while - for see the future - I can be quite a dreamer - but I am quickly put back in my place with the reality of life. It definitely is what we make of it and I just can't seem to get a handle on mine. Enough!
Today is the day we are making pillowcases for the American Patchwork and Quilting million pillowcase challenge. I hope we can produce a grundle to help with the cause!
Lets chat a bit about blogs. I love reading blogs. Sometimes I feel a little bit like a voyeur- but then it has been put on a blog! You visit a blog and then you can find other blogs from those blogs and it goes on and on. On one of my travels I found this fun blog and it needs to be shared with all of you - http://www.thebeehivecottage.blogspot.com/ . So keep blogging - I love love love it!

Saturday, March 20, 2010 was a wonderful day for my new grand daughter was born at 3:14 p.m. weighing in at 7 lb. 2 oz, 19" long, a head full of dark hair and as healthy as can be. How blessed are we!!!!!! Katy (the proud mom) had some tough times but came through like the trooper that she is. I am so amazed at the miracle of life - seeing this little person arrive after only 39 weeks- I wonder if I have done anything constructive in the last 39 weeks. I can't seem to get my camera to upload today - but I have taken some wonderful pictures. I will share them with you a.s.a.p. I just came to the shop after visiting with them today - I wish I could just hold her for the next few days- wouldn't that be the best thing ever! I wish for her a happy life, an open mind and a grateful heart - and to always know how much her Nanny Kaye loves her. xoxox

Tomorrow would be the anniversary of my marriage to Rob - it would have been 27 years - yikes! The night before our wedding we went out with friends and family that had come in to town and we all ate corn beef and cabbage and had green beverages - what a crazy fun night.
Isn't it nice to have this wonderful sunshine - I hope it lasts and soon I will be adjusted to day light savings time - am I the only one that struggles with the time change?? Must be an age thing. T T F N - Kaye

I forgot to turn the clock ahead at the shop and I figured it out at about 6:45 p.m. tonight - Not one customer took advantage of this extra hour! So I was looking at another blog and came across a picture and so I am going to do a test and see if I can post it- I smart like tractor!!!!

I am finalizing the retreat plans - should be worth the delays - I hope.

I will have a green treat for all you lucky Irishmen on Wednesday - and for all non-Irishmen and women too!!!!!! Don't forget the green or you may get pinched - do people still do that or would that be considered sexual harassment? !

What a great name for today's blog - that is about as creative as I am feeling. One of the many joys of aging is how slow my brain recall is - and today I mean slow. It took me so long to remember how to upload pictures - so I have included some from the Peace by Piece quilt retreat from 2 weeks ago and then some from the baby shower we had for my son Rob and his Katy. They were showered with the most delightful things for our new little girl - she will be the most well dressed, clean, diapered, fed hip & educated child ever born!!! Of course all of us Nannys' feel that way! Rob showed up just in time to unwrap the gifts. We had yummy food, a couple really FUN shower games (we all love shower games) and many laughs. I made Katy and the baby matching quilts from the Eva line of fabric that Moda had out last year - she loved the plum , green and pink. I have loaned them the wicker bassinet I had bought when I had Rob - made a liner and sheets to match the quilt - it really was sweet.
I hope you enjoy the pictures - I wish I were a better photographer - but I can't do everything!!!! But I can do some work today - have secured a couple of teachers for the retreat----- "Two Peas in a Pod" will be coming up from Bountiful to teach a fun mystery class in the afternoon. I have local wonders teaching in the morning and I am still trying to find a few more classes before everything is posted. I am slow but sure - as usual. Well I best get something else done - to all my peeps ( i don't mean those nasty marshmallow guys) out there - have a great week - and enjoy the bit of sunshine we have today. as I remain in pieces - Kaye

My blog is so very boring - not at all like all the ones I like to visit. I found a picture that i thought i would try to save - maybe share it with my friends. But it wouldn't load - something about being corrupt - I didn't think it was that bad at all- just nice. I will try again later>
I spent Thursday at a guild retreat - taught a mystery class in the afternoon - "Burgoyne Surrounded". It was a great group - although one lady wanted to lock me in the closest - but other than that I think everyone was pleased with the class!
I have started plans for a pillowcase making day - Friday, March 26, 3 - 9 pm, here at the shop. I am pretty sure that everyone has heard about the
"1 Million Pillowcase Challenge"
brought to us all by American Patchwork and Quilting. We want to do our part by participating in this great cause. At the shop, we will have a great time making pillowcase while visiting with friends and sharing eats! You can get more details at the shop as well. Hooray for Presidents Day

Lets celebrate Presidents Day with a Sale - our new line "Liberty" and a select group of other Americana fabrics are 25% OFF today - Monday February 15th. I loved the Liberty line because of the large scale toil print. Thank you George and Abe !
Unfortunately - we have had to make a couple of corrections on the new class schedule - it seems that every time - after proofing and proofing - we still have a goober or two. On Sat. Feb 27th, the Winding Ways class is from 1 - 4. The Mountain Valley class is February 24th - not the 17th. I think that is about it - but there is no guarantee!
Hope your Vaenetines Day brought you a little chocolate - maybe a flower and a lot of romance. Personally - I had breakfast with my daughter and my Granddaughter Winter - it was fun. Then I went home and sewed - I am making a bassinet liner, quilt and sheets for my new grand daughter- I hope she will like it. Grandchildren really are wonderful!

Long time no blog! I finally got the computer back last Friday - I have posted pictures from Winterfest. Zephie and I had a great time. My classes were alot of fun and it always fun to see familiar faces and meet some new ones!

I have put my Valentine fabrics on 25% off for this week - and I guess I had better come up with something for next Monday - Presidents Day. hummmmm -what will it be???

In case I haven't told you - I have removed myself from the Wasatch Front Shop Hop. It was a hard decision but the right one. I will concentrate on other things.

It is burrrry cold today - I about ready for Spring. Even my Aunt Marj told be today that she has "had enough!' But I am so looking forward to Winterfest. Zephie, Mary and I have been working hard to finish some new projects, make kits, fold fat quarters, and gather inventory so we can head out on Wednesday. It is about a 2.5 hr. drive to Daniels Summit from here - and I heard we are getting snow. If it would just hold off until we get to the retreat and then we could get snowed in - how awesome would that be! It truly is a beautiful location - surrounded by all the beautiful snow covered mountains. I tend to get little anxious while preparing for these kinds of events - my little booth next to Pine Needles and Corn Wagons' great booths - but at least I have some fun places to shop. The truth is - I am so grateful to still have my little shop still open that I not going to feel inadequate. It is so fun to see so many familiar faces at these retreats - some that you only see once or year. Mary will be holding down the shop while we are away so stop by and give her a bad time. I will come home with some pictures from retreat - so watch for them next week. Have a great week - Kaye

Greetings to you on MLK Day. Maybe you have the holiday off - but not me! Work - work - work. I am excited to say that I finished a quilt last night - a 2 color quilt from Kim Diehls newest book. I will have it to take it to the Winterfest retreat next week. Kim is the guest teacher this year. I will be teaching 2 fun classes - Burgoyne Surrounded and a Disappearing 9-patch. It is always a fun retreat - lots of familiar faces, fun vendors and good food. I am taking Zephie with me this year - she is taking a class from Kim and then taking care of the booth while I teach. I am really looking forward to our little working vacation.
We love it when the UPS truck stops at our back door. Today he brought 3 boxes of cloth - "Sent With Love" from Moda and "Liberty" from Windham. It has a big red toile that I love.
I must get down stairs to see and touch them. That always inspires me.
We are suppose to get snow this week - I hope it comes and cleans up our nasty air. Have a great week, Kaye

Happy Monday - I am starting my week with a better attitude by hell - It is a beautiful cold winters day here in happy valley! I really do love the sparkle of the snow in the sunshine!!!!
Mary is busy on the Gammill - Zephie is as productive as usual - (she finished 3 projects this weekend) and I am about ready to do something constructive! There are so many things that need to be done - but they will wait while I cut out a quilt project that I need to have done in 2 weeks so I can take it to Winterfest. Like my friend Mariann tells me - "if you would just APPLY yourself......"
I did try to make some rolls from scratch this weekend - they were awful. I started with new yeast and flour from Kitchen Kneads but choose the wrong recipe! I will try again next year.

Brother - where art thou?????

My brothers cremains are missing! He was shipped from Cumberland Maryland on Nov. 9, and then shipped back to Cumberland after 3 unsuccessful tries to deliver him to the Logan Cemetery. After we figured that all out, I gave the funeral home the address to the shop and asked that he be shipped here because there would always be someone here to sign for him during business hours. He has yet to show up. In death, as in his life, he is surrounded by trouble.
That is just one of the many things that has been racing through my mind these days. So many unanswered questions - the whys and what ifs - I can't stop the worrying. If you could go back in your life time and change one thing - what would it be? That is the burning question this week. My insecurities are showing - enough about me!
We have started on a class schedule - a beginning class with Marie Isrealson is set for Sat. Feb 6th - call and let us know if you want in. More to come!
Zephie and I are going to Winterfest the last week of this month. I will be teaching 2 different classes at the retreat. We are both busy working on some new projects to offer at our both in the vendor mall. This is always a fun retreat - held up in the snowy mountains close to Park City. at Daniels Summit Lodge. I am looking forward to the fun.
Stay warm this weekend and take time to do some quilting. Kaye

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Can you believe that the year is over? Even Zephie commented today about how fast time is going by. We had a wonderful Christmas at our house - and passed the stomach flu through the crowd! Feeling much much better and looking forward to a New Year. I spent last evening sitting alone near the Christmas tree, enjoying the lights, watching the tele and being thankful that I didn't have to be doing one single thing. I think I will do the same thing tonight!
As in all the years since the Red Rooster was born, we will be "closed" on the 31st and 1st. But I will be here on Saturday - trying to come up with come new ideas for the new year.
My hope is for us all to have a peaceful, content, grateful and creative New Year - my best wishes to all and a sincere Thank You for all your kind support. See you in 2010 --- Kaye

Goodness Gracious

Greetings - Well I spent Sunday making fudge, peanut brittle, cookie dough and hand quilting! I will be ready for this holiday - no matter what! I have so enjoyed my Christmas tree this year - having only the tree lights on in the room makes it feel so Christmasy - I love seeing all the ornaments - remembering who made them - when it was given and received. I have a few ornaments left from the first Christmas with my daughter Stacy - hand sewed from felt with beads and sequins - photo ornaments from Rob in grade school, special ones from friends and loved ones. The holidays are really meloncholy for me - missing my husband and my parents - remembering all the crazy family holidays. I am hoping that this Christmas will add many more happy memories for my children, their families and yours too. Remember to always "KISS" these times (Keep It Simple Stupid)- a customer said that to me one day - I thought it was so funny !
Something work related - I currently have 2 great trunk shows hanging in the shop right now. My featured local quilter is Diane Marvin. She let us borrow her wonderful cathedral window quilt and a beautiful yo-yo coverlet - she is very productiveand severl other great quilts. We also have the traveling trunk show for the Winterfest Retreat that is being held in January. Lots of fun ideas to see and be inspired by!

Winter - The purple princess party, Nov 17, 2009

These are the piggies of a purple princess - the night before her birthday - having a wonderful time while Stacy and I slave over the cake - it was so cute and delicious too. The party was a success and the purple satin cape I made her was a hit - I need to get a better picture of it.

Then there was Thanksgiving - I cooked a very good meal - if I do say so myself - with one big exception - my pies were AWFUL. My pecan pie didn't ever set up - but it looked pretty and I over seasoned my Pumpkin Praline pie - nasty! I took only one picture all day - it was of my daughters appetizers - so I won't share it!

Now - it is Christmas time - the most happiest time of the year! NOT ! I am starting to feel the stress of it all already - too many thoughts running in my tired brain - do this - do that - make this - make that for her. Do you listen to the voices inside your head? My inner self is not my friend. I have just about figured out how to work on the "level of Priority " - what has to be done today - tomorrow - and what can I put off until next week. As always, life goes on whether I am ready for it or not. I wish I had the energy I had 25 years ago to keep up with all the ideas I can come up with in my head today. So I am going to try real hard to keep the spirit of the sharing, giving and gratitude, and try to not beat myself up over everything else. Who knows - maybe someday I will really bare my soul!

Red Friday

My Thanksgiving dinner was wonderful if I do say so myself - with one very big exception - my pies were both failures. My pecan pie looked beautiful but is was totally runner inside and my praline pumpkin was too spicy (except for the bottom praline layer that was yummy) . I will not give up - because pie is great!
Something strange has gotten into my son - his lady - Katy - had that man up and shopping at 4 a.m. today. They must be right for each other! They were both asleep at my house when I got up at 7 and there is a big stack of gifts in the kitchen - they were successful. I hope Katy wasn't injured in the process.
I started knitting a hat for new granddaughter yesterday - so I guess that means I have officially started my Christmas holiday preparations. There have been a few people in the shop already and they are in shopping mode. I hope I have something they want. We are having some great specials for the next 2 days. Hard to believe that it is Thanksgiving - I haven't had time to upload pictures and write a new post - Winters birthday pics are waiting for you to see - a purple princess party was enjoyed by many. The purple satin cape I made her has finally come off. We are getting ready for red Friday - hope you can stop in- we will have hot cider and treats as well as a sale! We have put together a very simple stitchery pattern that will be free with purchase. So if you like it or not - Christmas is on its' way. My youngest child is turning 21 today - my how time flies! Yes that makes me feel even older than I usually feel. I fixed my family dinner yesterday - Rob Roy requested Chicken Parmigiana and Pecan Pie and so that it what I made, and I must admit that it was a yummy meal. He was happy and that was all that mattered.
I had a email from one of my vendors this morning and from there was a link to another website and from that I read about something fun - go to http://www.trick-or-eat.com/ and see what these bloggers are doing. I didn't have time to go through it all - maybe later- but it looked like fun.
I have so enjoyed this fall weather. All the falling leaves remind me of when I was a child and how we would play in the leaves all the way to and from school. Yes - we would walk to school way back then. I went to Adams Elementary here in Logan. We always had a fun Halloween Festival and then we could Trick or Treat all the way home. Its' too bad that those things don't happen anymore. We will be doing Trick or Treating in downtown Logan this coming Saturday. So don your favorite costume and bring the little one's to all the participating businesses. It is always fun - lots to see.

How bad am I - no pictures from out retreat. You will just have to trust me on this - so much fun. I wish every quilter I know could get together and have that much fun. Zephie, Mary and Lucy got their quilt top done from our block exchange - not me!!! Shanna finished a quilt she started 2 years ago - you go girl!!! Marie and Ruth worked on hand work - wait till you see Maries " Dear Jane" quilt. I worked on projects for an event the first weekend of November at the Presbyterian Church. I also made a very fun ABC quilt for my New Grand Baby- due in March of 2010. I can't remember if I had yet posted the news - Rob and Katy are very excited about the little sprout. as am I - a baby will be a grand addition to my little family.
Speaking of my little family - a sad note, I was notified 3 weeks ago about the death of my brother Bruce. We haven't been in contact for about 11 years - for valid reasons that I won't go in to. He was 58 - died of cancer while in Cumberland Maryland. He did have a nice friend that took care of him and I am grateful for what she did. I am still trying to figure out how I feel about it all. That is enough for now.
We received some new Moda fabrics yesterday - dark and dirty - and some cute Christmas from Riley Blake - snowmen! Now - what to make! Have a great day, Kaye

My friend Krista had her annual Halloween party on Saturday , October 10- it was alot of fun - people - food - activities and such a beautiful day. She and her husband had their backyard all decked out for the event and it was wonderful. You will see from some of the pictures that my beautiful daughter Stacy and I found our Mr. Right!

I need to remind folks that the Red Rooster shop will close at 3 pm this coming Saturday and will be CLOSED on Monday Oct. 19 - each October my employees and I enjoy a couple days retreating at Bear Lake - we have so much fun, stay in Shanna Larsens' beautiful home , take turns cooking meals and we are doing another block exchange this year. We look forward to it and hope it doesn't cause anyone any inconvience.

Then on Tuesday, I have to be in Salt Lake by 10 a.m. for the first Shop Hop meeting of the year - yes we start the planning already. It will be a great event next June. "Let's Celebrate" is the theme with each shop choosing a holiday or event. Pretty soon it will be Thanksgiving!

Zephies Endearing Quilt

Our star quilter has her quilt top all done after last weeks fabric exchange and it is wonderful.
The colors all worked together and the plum borders just add to its beauty. That is great inspiration for me - now to just do it!

We have a great trunk show hanging in the shop right now - quilts made by Shanna Gibbons from Lewiston Utah. Her Winter Wonderland quilt seems to be everyones favorite. Oh - but wait - this month is over and the next trunk show will be quilts from Cindy Larsen - our Utah Quilt Guild Area Rep. Really - the days are zooming past me.

The first snow fall of the year and to me that means that we can all stay inside now and get some serious sewing done. Tomorrow I am heading out of town with some friends for 3 days of sewing - I am sew excited. I tend to over pack whenever I go anywhere - so I may have more projects to do than time will allow - we'll see. I will give a detailed report next week.

We did receive from Marcus Brothers some traditional Christmas reds and greens - I love them.
They are reproductions of course. Still wondering what to make with them.

We are starting our new Buck a Block quilt tomorrow. You can still sign up - pay $10 for the starting pack, and then $1 a month (when you show your completed block) and in the end you will have a great sampler quilt. Completion kits will be available as well. Come in and join - its only a buck!

I baked this all by myself - and it was very yummy! I love golden delicious apples for baking- but I did use a Pillsbury pie crust. Someday when I have more time I am going to learn to make the perfect piecrust.

Greetings to all - My friend Lorna and I went to Layton Utah yesterday to see the Utah Quilt Guild Quilt Show and walk the vendor mall. The quilt show was wonderful and awe inspiring. There was a special display of "Dear Jane" quilts and they were wonderful. I am always amazed at the way color interpretation is used. It makes you want to put aside everything you are working on and start up some new projects. It is aways fun to see what the different vendors are offering - a great new set of rulers for cutting prairie points was shown. I am ordering them for the shop so you will have to stop by for a demo and ideas on how to use them when they arrive. The leaves are starting to change to warm fall colors in Sardine canyon, always a beautiful drive.
"Colonial Christmas" fabrics arrived yesterday - very old fashioned and fun in traditional red and greens.
On the home front - I hadn't posted anything about my sons dog - "Vinnie". Many people had met him here at the shop the few times that I had to bring him along. He was in a accident 2 weeks ago - fell out of the back of a moving truck (should have been restrained) and shattered a hind leg. I am happy to report that Robs' decision to have the leg amputated was the best decision he has made in a long time and probably the hardest. Vinnie is amazing - up on his 3 legs the next day - and able to get around so very well. We all love Vinnie and wish him a fast recovery and a happy life. We love him so much - even Frank likes him!

Hi - Wanted to let everyone know that the new class schedule is on the website - you can even print yourself a copy. Isn't this modern technology something wonderful! Unfortunately not all my samples are done but they will be real soon - I am trying real hard ! The new Buggy Barn fabric arrived today - it is so dark and dirty and beautiful! Now - what to make out of it.
I was able to play with some girlfriends on Saturday for a little while - we made the cutest stinkin button flowers with wire stems. I will post the picture soon - forgot the camera today. I made a bouquet of red - black & white flowers for my little Aunt Marj and gave them to her at her 92nd birthday party! Praise to women everywhere - we are the greatest!!!!! Hope to see you all sometime this weekend - I won't be able to make a treat but I will find us all some chocolate.

The gang has gone home, but they did get a fun simple block done tonight. Zephie has finished the whole quilt top - how cute is that- now to quilt it. I have the first 3 blocks done - I tried so hard to keep up with this one. Damn. Now if I could just figure out how to make the pictures bigger on the blog. So much to learn and so little gray matter left and getting older by the second.
9-11 - this coming Friday - a day that changed us all a little bit. Happens to be my birthday- yes I am on the downhill slide to 60 now. Oh- it hurts to even think it. 9-11 - the day of the attack was also the last birthday I had with my husband - I remember the morning all too well -it was the first day of Needles and Friends quilt guild - I got into the meeting a few minutes late, and Rob Roy said to me that my birthday would never be the same - he was right. Wouldn't it be nice if we could forget some things. Wouldn't it be nice if there really was Peace on Earth. Love to all, Kaye

... that there are too many women in this valley with too much time on their hands and they are able to create the most wonderful quilts! I made it a point to go the the opening day of Needles & Friends Quilt Guild - what a bunch of over achievers. If you ever want to feel inadequate about your quilting accomplishments - go to one of their meetings - you will be in awe of what you see. The meeting today was wonderful - nice to see so many familiar faces and to see the lovely work that the ladies have done - they really are so very talented. I really am so envious!
Back to reality - I FINISHED a project that I started in 2004 - I know that is when I started it because there is a block on the front of the project (a wool quilt that was one of the first block of the month projects ever offered at the Rooster) and it says "remember me 2004 ". Thank goodness I don't have to say when I finished the project. But I am so glad it is finally done. Zephie is working very hard on getting the new class schedule ready - it will be posted on the web site by next Thursday - the 17th.
I am ready to leave - have to go get a hug and kiss from Winter - she was out camping all last weekend with her dad. Have a great week, Kaye

Roosters in my yard

One year ago I sold my home in North Logan and bought a condo here in Logan- in fact I am only 3 blocks from the store, and yes, in an extreme emergency I could walk to the shop and we could talk about that later. Now you would think that I wouldn't be hearing and seeing what I consider farm animals where I now live, but there is a very noisy ROOSTER that lives behind me, and he crows all day and now his gals are coming through the hedge and strutting across the back of the lots. Now I think they are pretty cute - they are big and not too noisy. But that rooster needs to have his inner clock reset. OK - I know I am suppose to love roosters - and at first I thought "oh how fun", but not anymore. I am going to try and enjoy them, but we will see how long I can last. It is almost time for a big pot of chicken soup!
We all had a great time at our economy quilting fabric exchange last week. I spoke with one of the ladies today that was here - she took a day off from work to stay home and sew her nine patches - all 242 of them. Way to go Michelle - there is a 12 step program for quilters like you!

I think Fall is in the air - except when it is 90' outside! I just love the chilly mornings! Can you believe that it is the last day of August. I was a little productive this weekend with cleaning bathrooms and sewing - at least one thing I love to do. I am in charge of a Round Robin project for the upcoming year in Peace by Piece Quilt Guild and I was able to finish my center block. This will be a new thing for that guild to do so I hope they will want to participate.
We have been trying to put things together for our Fall Open House. It will be September 17, 18 & 19. You will just have to check back with us to see the fall class schedule and what other fun things we have planned. Mark those days on your calender- the 17th is the Opening Social of for the guild Peace by Piece so you will have to stop by ofter the meeting.

I was running out of space so I will do a second entry today - I have some much to say! Next Wed. August 26th, is out first Economy Quilting night. I hope you have started your ACCURATE cutting of 6'' squares from your scraps. This is the first time we have tried to organize a fabric swap - it should be fun ( I hope ) . We will start at 5 p.m.. Remember there is no charge for the class so come and learn a new method of making 9 patchs. If I can get my act together I will even make a treat. Today is her last day at her daycare so she took a treat - she even frosted them quite well but wasn't happy with me for running out of sprinkles! How I love that child! the Stolen Nectarines

HI - it is a very sad week for my sweet little 92 year old Aunt Marj - someone stole all 22 nectarines off of her tree. How can this be in this safe little hometown. Aunt Marj and her son John planted the tree last year - being told it was an apricot tree. The blooms this spring were beautiful and the fruit really grew. It was going to be picked the very next day - and when she went out to pick them they were gone. She keeps telling the story over and over again - unable to believe that the thief wouldn't even leave one for them to taste. It just goes to show you - nothing is sacred in this town - not even your fruit! I told them to write a letter to the Herald Journal - I may have to do it for them. This is almost as bad as stealing flowers off of the graves. Some people just need a swift kick in the butt! Enough of that- lets talk about me! I have nothing to whine about today - unless you want to hear about my pet peeves - I won't start.

Valentines Fabric

I guess I am in a real hopeful mood today when I order fabric for 2010 Valentines Day! Please please please let me survive these trying times! Some days I tend to worry alot, of course there is always a lot to worry about - work, work, kids, work, money - & I worry about wasting my time as well. I just can't win! Some days I am ready to give it all up, but then what would I do.
I guess I will just keep plugging along at a snails pace and keep praying for a small miracle. That chip on my shoulder is showing. I will change subjects - new homespuns came in yesterday - 13 bolts of wonderful. I like it dark and dirty - such a good phrase. I also got in Gobble Gobble fabrics form Moda with some charm packs and turnovers. I haven't made anything out of the turnovers yet (they are the pieces cut into triangles) but I will get right on it! I also had a young lady from here in Logan come in today and she has designed some bags - pretty darn cute so I bought a few of her patterns - I think she is on the right track! I am heading to my daughters house to have supper with her and Winter - we have got to teach that child how to sit up to the table and eat a meal with her family - she is just too busy. I just can't tell you how much I adore her! Stacy and I went to see Julie & Julia last Saturday - what a fun movie - Meryl streep is amazing. Now I want to cook through the book too - but I know I never will - go see it. I am out of here - Kaye

Hi - another busy week - had a great sewing day with friends yesterday - made 2 fun little wool projects, had good food and some great visiting. I love to get together and sew with friends.
The Quilts & More magazine finally came in today. The quilt we have the kits for is on page 38 and is oh so cute. You can come in and purchase the kit and magazine here at the shop for $60 - a special price for store shoppers! Zephie is up in Washington to a family wedding- hope she is having fun and you all know how much I miss her. Mary and Isobel will be running the shop on Saturday because I have to stay home for the next 2 days and try to get something done. My home is in desperate need of a once over everywhere. My son moving back in with me is like having a toddler around - although he is 2o years old! I really am glad he is there - but what happened to all my good training - he has forgotten everything! I survived camping

I am back from a great few days of camping - I prayed for rain and I got it!! Friday the wind blew - and all 15 of us huddled around the fire. I hadn't packed enough warm cloths - so Winter and I cuddled up and went to sleep about 10 - the wind finally stopped and we had a bit of rain in the morning - about half of the group went home. It stopped raining but it stayed cloudy and chilly most of the day. I did knit half of a dishcloth but that was the extent of my hand work. Sat. evening my friends Krista and Gary arrived - we had a wonderful dutch oven dinner their kids had started - it was a much calmer evening. Alter a better nights sleep, we awoke to some sunshine - but still had a great fire. I swear I can still smell it on me even after a couple of showers. After cleaning up the camp site, Stacy, Winter and I had lunch back on the beach - Bear Lake really is beautiful. But I must admit, I was glad to get home do the laundry and put everything away. I was down in the sewing room by 6:30. Today is my Stacy's 38th birthday - how can it be??? She wants sushi for dinner (yuk) so we are all going to Black Pearl.

QUilts & More

We are so excited because we get to have our shop name in a national magazine!! The fall issue of "Quilts & More" will be out next week and we have kits for one of the featured projects - with fabrics from Basic Grey which is one of the lines from Moda. Don't the kits look so stinkin' cute all layed out like that!!! I am still waiting for more background fabric so I can finish up the pink ones. Hopefully they will fly right out of here.
Well I am gearing up for my weekend of camping with my children and friends. Dear Lord, please watch over me more than usual. It has been many years since I have spent a night in the wild. I am a little concerned about the early morning potty run - will report back next week. I have been trying to come up with what hand work to take - hopefully there won't be any dirt.
Will I ever be a completed project - will I ever have it all together ? Some days I am so tired of being a work in progress - still looking for more hours. Enjoy the cooler days, and pray for rain. Kaye

Wonderful Quilts

My oh my - it is so hot outside today. Let me be the first to say - is summer about over???
On Monday afternoon, Zephie and I hung this months trunk show - the quilts are wonderful.
Shirley Joffs was kind enough to bring me a great big armload of her work - I wish I had the room to have kept all of them. Please stop by and witness them for yourself! She has sisters that she swaps fabric with - that just adds to her variety - especially in the two batik quilts.
It is time for Frank and I to go home - we are stopping by Smiths Marketplace since this is the last day of the double coupons! Yes - I love coupons - must be the 25 years in the grocery business. have a pleasant and cool evening - Kaye

What a laugh

This has absolutely nothing to do with quilting - but it made me laugh out loud this morning. In the Herald, there is a short article about a 7 year old boy that took the family car for a joy ride - had been clocked at 40 mph - when asked why , he told his father that he didn't want to go to church !! What a scream!! Not even my son would have done that ! Speaking of him - Rob Roy III - is now living with me - so far so good. His boss has no work for him - this economy crunch has really hit Cache Valley. I had a wild and crazy dream last night- President Obama was coming to the valley. They had blocked off the intersection of Center and Main - there were a bunch of bikers parked on the corner and i couldn't read what was on their shirts. Mariann (my friend) had made me walk home from somewhere out on the highway to Wellsville - she didn't like that I had gone in to someones kitchen to finish making a pizza dough - but no one was there but she sure had a lot of kitchen tools. So I scooted on my fanny part way, stopped to talk to some people who were lining the streets, and then kept walking- that is when I saw Senator Orrin Hatch and Mr Lyle Hillyard waiting for the president. I continued to walk, got lost taking the long way home - then woke up! Please- tell me what it all means! xoxo K

New Batiks

New lovelys came into the shop today! (Mary will be so sad she isn't here for first pick-she is a batik freak)
We received fat quarter bundles - 14 or 24 count - of Princess Mirah's Batiks from Bali Fabrics. I haven't done much sewing with batiks but I must say that the fabrics are truly beautiful. Stop buy and take a peek!

Summer is so busy...

... but then so is Fall,Winter and then there is Spring! I am just not able to keep myself on any kind of schedule and at the rate I am going I will be too old to change. We survived the sidewalk sale - it was fun. Mary is on vacation until the first of August, Ruth is out of town for the week, Zephie is going on vacation next month - and I can't keep up with Isobel and Marie. I have to let them come and go as they please! Today, I have spent most of my time on the computer doing bookwork - which I do enjoy - but I don't do it on SCHEDULE - so I get behind and then it takes me days to get caught up. Like I said - I will never learn. But I do have a good excuse - it is a lot more fun to be working with the fabric, trying to come up with some new projects and keeping up with new stuff. Life keeps getting in my way! I was able to go the Bear Lake this past Saturday with my friend Krista. We stayed in her sisters home- we ate simply - didn't make a mess - and she made yo - yo's and I appliqued a cute turkey wall hanging. I find it relaxing to do hand applique. Then on Sunday morning, I finished a cross stitch project that I started the day after Christmas last year - yippy! I think I will still get the prize for "she that dies with the most unfinished project - wins".
The first part of August, the new Quilts & More magazine will be on the shelf's. I am excited to let everyone know that there will be a cute quilt, made by local quilter Brenda Hawkes, using her daughters fabric from Moda (the fabric is the Sultry line) and Red Rooster Quilts & Treasures is offering the kits. We will have it in both color ways. I will have some available to purchase here in the shop so I will spread the word when they are ready. I think that is pretty exciting.

Get ready for a SALE

Greetings all - It is once again time for the Great American Sidewalk Sale in Historical Downtown Logan - whew - that's a mouth full! This Thursday - Saturday - come wander down Main street and look for bargains and treats - what a great combination! I will be having the bargains at the Rooster - inside where it is nice and cool, all fabric, books, patterns & notions will be 25% off. Outside in the smoldering heat, I have lots of bargains, - $1 fat qtrs, books and patterns at 50% off - WOW- and lots of other great stuff. You don't want to miss this one! Growing up in Logan - I fondly remember coming downtown to the sidewalk sale. There were so many more stores that participated - Woolworth's, The Shoe Tree, The Cottage Shoe store, JC Penney, and how about Low Cost Drug! My great friend, Mary Ann Curtis and I would catch the bus to town and just walk the streets - we loved it. Who remembers the Red Fox - I still have one dress that I bought there when I was a junior in high school - the dress is only about 30" long and now it may go around my right leg - but I can't give it up. I worked at Fredricos Pizza House when I was in high school so I had a little bit of my own spending money (90 cents an hour) I certainly know how to date myself.
Hopefully I will see lots of familiar faces this weekend. Today I told Zephie that after the sidewalk sale we can settle down and we will get back into our routine - she just laughed at me and said that would never happen - she knows me too well.
I have been suffering with Vertigo for the past few days - so if you see me stumbling around - don't be surprised ! take care - Kaye

I am just going to let everyone know that I don't like the hot weather - anything over 80 is just too hot for this fat body! I have so enjoyed the rain this year - reminds me of Oregon!
I barely survived Shop Hop - last week was spent mostly feeling sorry for myself and recovering. Now it is time to prepare for the Sidewalk Sale - July 9, 10 & 11. I can't believe the year is half over already. I guess we had better start thinking about fall classes. One thing I have been contemplating is a buck -a - block project - it would be called "My Recession Sampler" in honor of these difficult times. I am thinking way too hard on how to do it - but it should be ready to start by the end of summer. SO - how sad about Micheal and Farrah. I do feel sorry for his children - and my kids think I'm a weirdo. It is time for Frank and I to head for the barn ( oh my - my mother used to say that). Have a safe and fun 4th of July - I hope to spend it quietly at home! Kaye

A BIG Day

Today really was a big day for me and the shop - the owners from almost all the Wasatch Front Shop Hop shops came to town for our closing meeting. We all get together the Tuesday following the event to discuss how great everything went - what we could improve on, what we won't do again - we make plans for next year, we show and share our shop hop quilts and then we start drawing from the completed passports to see who wins all the great prizes. This year we will gave out over 350 prizes - how sweet is that! I can honestly say that I think that all the quilts were great - what a wonderful creative bunch we are!!! It really is fun to see each shops interpretation of all the same block patterns. Only 3 shop owners got pulled over while driving through Sardine Canyon ( bless the officers little heart - none got tickets) and a handful of us got parking tickets ( Logan City is ruthless about parking). Now we can move on to some new projects and get ready for the Sidewalk Sale! Get ready for a heat wave - they say its' coming! Have a great day, Kaye

Last Day

Well - it is the final day of Shop Hop - It is still early in the day and I could remember how to post some pictures! I hope that everyone that has participated has had a great time - I know we have. There are some customers you only see during shop hop - but I try to remember them. I am grateful that they will drive up to Logan.

I am hoping to have enough ice cream sandwiches to get me through today - it will be close. I started with 1296 !

We have received a fabric order every day this week - Homespuns, reproductions, with some fun Americana mixed in - I love Americana fabric - I am always anxious to get out my home decor American things.

First Day of Shop Hop

Its' finally here - and how fun is all this! I even love the rain. Everyone seems to be excited for the hop - I love that so many folks drive up to Logan to start their trek. Two ladies drove from Salt Lake, out to Tooele and then to Logan and are now working their way home. Which ever way you do it, make sure you have fun. Holy Moly - my minutes are flying by - still lots to do - today my great kids (notice today I said they are great) went to pick up a freezer and Fat Boy Jrs at the Caspers plant in Richmond. That is the treat we are giving away for shop hop. The final countdown has begun, we are getting close - but still work left to do. Hope you are all ready for a fun adventure.
I had some great Halloween fabric come in today - hard to think about those fall holidays as we are just starting summer. I don't know about you but I love the rain - must be from all the years we lived in Oregon. Soon we will be whining about the heat and then we will whine about the snow. Will we ever be happy??? Only 4 more days to the start of Shop Hop. I hope you have your trip all planned and your credit cards ready!! I will have the quilt done by then - I only have to sew about 85 different buttons on it this weekend and finish the binding. It is a very fun quilt - it turned out much better than I had imagined. If for some sad reason you are not going to go on the hop - try to stop by the shop and see the quilt. I will have to take a picture and post it here. We will be serving a fun ice cream treat, giving away prizes and having a fun time.
We are so excited to have a wonderful trunk show in the shop for Shop Hop. A Utah designer, Cheryl Brown, has published her first book, "Fresh and Fabulous" which is exactly what her quilts are. She also loaned us a few other quilts from her collection that are absolutely wonderful. Her applique work is perfect! Cheryl will be here to greet and even autograph a book for you on Friday, June 19, during Shop Hop. Please stop by and meet this wonderful quilter.
We have been very busy finishing up the last of some new store models, putting out orders and mentally preparing each other for this event. I hope I havn't forgotten anything and I hope everyone will have a great time. I will try to post updates next week. Take care - Kaye

Good Morning - It's almost - Shop Hop - its' only 2 weeks away and I am getting nervous!! I have about 100 bolts of fabric on its' way - some new gift items and lots of patterns and books - I hope it is what everyone is looking for! Zephie has come up with some hats - she is going to make me wear one- and some great fat quarters (ice cream) on a stick - so cute. The collectible Shop Hop pins have arrived. They are $5 each and all proceeds go directly to the organization to help us buy some of the wonderful prizes we give away. It is always a last minute rush to prepare for these things - just like Christmas - we know it is coming and we have a year to prepare - but Why!!!!! Have a great weekend - Kaye

June is creeping up on me too quickly - I don't like it. We still have few classes left in our spring line up - so you can still get in on all the fun. We added another "Beginning Piecing" class with Marie Isrealson on Sat June 13th, a great workshop where you can learn all the basics to get you started. Zephie is teaching a "Simple Sampler" class on Wed. June 3 - you will make 12 different 6 1/2" blocks using "Thangles" - a great paper tool for making half square triangles. On Wed, June 3rd, I am teaching my "Tumblers" quilt - a fun one block quilt using a 5" tumbler template. And last but not least - there is still room for a few more in the Machine Quilting class taught by Renae Allen. For all you who want to quilt your quilts on your home sewing machine - this class is a must - she makes it seem so easy.
If you need any inspiration at all - stop by the shop and we will share some of ours with you - so many projects just calling your name!

What a lovely morning- but must work! I forgot to post that I am having a SALE on all books and patterns that are in-stock - Thursday -Friday & Sat - 30% OFF. Then - we will be CLOSED on Monday in observance for Memorial Day.
For the month of May - our trunk show is from my shop manager - Zephie Mikesell. She is a very diverse quilter - among her quilts is one of her first projects- a beginning class sampler that she made in a 4 part class she took from me several years ago while I was working at Stylish Fabrics, a Skull quilt - her 16 year old son designed and requested she make for him ( he even gave her the dimensions ), a water color scene, applique quilts and fun piecing. What a gal - she is great. Please come by to see them!
I am sure you all need another reminder about shop hop - June 17,18,19 & 20. It will be a fun time for all. We are all working hard on the preparations.
On the personal side, I visit the cemetery alot, especially on Memorial Day weekend. There are many pictures of me taken at the cemetery as a child - but we didn't picnic!!! My dad used to put the flags on the graves- I would ride in the truck with him and would get carsick - too many turns - what a crazy memory! We remember all our family members as well as my father and 2 uncles that served in WWII. It a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. If you are familiar with the Logan cemetery - you have probably seen the tall statue of the Weeping Woman. That is the grave of my Great Grandmother Cronquist. She lost 4 children from influenza within one year - hence the story of why she wept. Behind the statue is a small grave of 2 sisters, Emilia and Inez. They died within a week of each other in 1901 and are buried together. I have a portrait of them that was done in 1900 hanging over my headboard - it is so lovely. The cemetery is so rich in family history and all the untold stories we will never know of - I find it very interesting. I have my visits all mapped out - the cremains of my husband Rob Roy are buried next to my dad, my mom is with her parents and siblings, my great grandfather Hoffman and his 3 wives all in a row, then my Great Grandmother and then I even visit my first husbands grave - after all I did love him first and he is my Stacy's father. How crazy am I !!! So - whatever you do this weekend - make it memorable and think of those that have come and gone on before us. But please - take some time to sew! Kaye

Greetings - I am teaching a fun class here at the store tomorrow - "Disappearing 9-patch" . This is a real easy and quick quilt pattern. Stop by - if you can - and check it out! Then I am going to a friends annual "Scottish" party - I love men in kilts!!! It should be fun - I made some Scottish Shortbread to take - if there is any left - it turned out very good! I am going to have some time on Sunday to start another project for the store - a cute quilt from the Fig Tree Houses book - Hopefully it will be done in time for Shop Hop- you never know with me! My Cupcake

Winter is my grand daughter - 3 1/2 years old - She is here only as a test to see if I could upload another picture - and it worked. Now - how did I do that ? We had made a giant cupcake cake for her - I get to watch her every Thursday night and I do try to having something fun for us to do - I want her to have happy memories of her Nanny.
We are starting our Girl Gang tonight - I'm excited because I already have my blocks done - for a change! We are doing a quilt from Jan Patik - we love her primitive applique. She has included alternate projects and recipes for each month. Zephie has made the treat that goes along with the block - it is an Onion & Pineapple Chutney - it sure smells good and if it tastes good I will post it on Friday.
I am quilting on the Gammill today so I had better get back to work - I just needed a little break. happy quilting - Kaye

Happy Mothers Day

It is a beautiful day in the neighborhood - I hope not everyone will be outside in the sunshine this weekend. I did promise my Aunt Marj that I would take her to the opening of the local "Farmers Market" for some heirloom tomato plants - that would be fun. I am not going to be working hard preparing a Mothers day meal this year - I'm just not in the mood, so I am offering carrot cake and tea to anyone who wants to join me that afternoon!
We still have a few copies left of the American Patchwork Quilt Sampler magazine - we always sell out quite quickly- if is a fun issue to have - lots of ideas and projects - just in case you need to start something new! We got a few bolts of cloth today - dots and stripes from RJR- they are fun. I must get to work, have a wonderful weekend and to all mothers - you are wonderful everyday - but especially on Mothers Day. Kaye

Another stormy Saturday

I have been at the shop all day today, working alone - but it was just a steady good day. It was commencement at USU, a big dance competition at the high school and a Webkin extravaganza at the Hallmark store- so needless to say there have been lots of people in town today. The rain seems to keep people home - safe and warm and hopefully sewing on a new project or cuddled up in your favorite spot - stitching! I did some sewing last night - I made one of the Fit to Frame patterns from - "from my heart to your hands" - and watched 'Me & Marley" - I cried at the end - I'm glad Frank was asleep at my feet and missed the ending. Tonight I am going to buttonhole around my 2 block of the month blocks so that I will be all caught up- I wonder how long that will last! I still have one Shop Hop block to make - it looks like a hard one - I am not much of a paper piecer - but I will try. Stay warm and dry - Kaye

Back to Reality

Spring Break is over but not forgotten! I had a great time and so I hope that means that all those that participated did too. Since this was the first time I have ever done a retreat on that scale it became a learning experience for me. The one real concern I had was about the close quarters - we quilters need our space. I truly hope that no one was uncomfortable at any time during the day. I thought the classes were good, the cake yummy, the meals tasty, the trunk show was lovely and the weather was perfect for a retreat day. A great big THANK YOU to my friends and employee's that guided - counseled- reminded - and confirmed my thoughts, ideas, plans and questions. I depend so much on the people I surround myself with - but I have been blessed with the best. I have had enough suggestions to do it again and so I will. If you have anything special you would like to see done, please let me know. We have put away all the store supplies, I have combined my different files, forms, papers, and receipts and I can see one part of my desk again - so we have recovered. Now - on to Shop Hop. Fuel the jet and pack you bags----

OK - gas the car and gather up your sewing gear - one more week and we are off to our Spring Break in the Hamptons retreat. I am a bit nervous- hoping I can pull it off and that everyone will have a fun time. I am out to gather up more door prizes from local businesses today- they have been so generous. I attended a half day of the Peace by Piece day retreat yesterday - it was alot of fun. There are so many talented women in this valley - they were working on all different kinds of projects. One of the classes offered was the Fit to Frame patterns form the company "from my heart to your hands" - they are small quilts, finished at sizes to fit in ready made frames. They are so very cute - a great way to display smaller things and easy to change the quilts for holidays, seasons or whatever! Happy Birthday Frank

Yes, Frank is 11 years old today! For his breed that is 77 years - no wonder he is so gray - I will probably be gray when I am 77 too. At this point of my life, the only thing I can control is the color of my hair - how pathetic is that.
I have forgotten to mention the current trunk show hanging in the shop - two friends from Mendon, Jeri Chenney and Kari Rich ,brought in some real fun quilts for our viewing pleasures. Try to stop by to see them.
We have introduced our new block of the month - a Jan Patek Girl Gang applique quilt and it is so cute. I have always been a fan of her primitive quilts. We are doing this quilt using a machine applique - button hole stitch - but you could use your favorite method of applique. I still need to get a picture of the quilt to my "master" so he can get it on the website for me. There just aren't enough hours in the day for me - if I just didn't need my sleep.
Well I have to run my big fat check out to my accountants office now - damned taxes. I don't know what I am doing wrong - I wish someone could figure me out.

It is hard to believe that Red Rooster opened its' doors for the first time 6 years ago. For our birthday we are having a pick your own present day on Wed. April 8th.- you can pick a ticket from a basket (a Longaberger basket that is) and it will reveal your savings - our present to you! We just about have our new class schedule ready - and we will get it posted on the website by the end of the week. Please stop by the shop and see the class projects we have on display.
Only 3 more spots open for the retreat - I am getting so excited - I hope you are too. Don't be fooled by this beautiful weather we are having - you still have time to get in some sewing. My cute Aunt Marj, she is 91 years old, stopped by on her way to Andersons Seed and Garden to get a long handled tool for weeding. She is an amazing woman. I think she loves working in her garden as much as loves sewing. I hope she knows how much I love and respect her.

The sun is shining and it is a beautiful day. I came into the shop to try and get a little work done. I am still trying to fix up some things that the hacker did to me last week - ugh! Let's talk retreat - if you are still interested in joining us for Spring Break in the Hamptons - your time is running out! There are only 4 spots left to fill - I have closed the Mystery class, but there are some other great classes left. It will be a fun day and you deserve to participate!!! I am back from London

Yikes - IF you were on my hotmail contact list, a hack-ass sent you a email, telling you that I was in London England, working on a Youth Program fighting racism/HIV and the need for sound education. Please send money for I can't access my account. Sounds just like me don't you think!!!!! Needless to say - I have no more hotmail account, it wasn't a virus, just hackers - how pathetic are they. Some days I am ready to crawl under a rock to live out my days.
I am excited about our retreat. I have had to close the Mystery class - it is full to the brim - but there is still room in the other classes. It is going to be alot of fun - hurry to sign up.
They are calling for one of the worst snow storms of the season tonight and tomorrow - maybe we will get snowed in - we can spend all day sewing on a quilting project!
Frank and I must head for home and have a spot of supper. I think we will watch American Idol & Dancing with the Stars while I bind the mystery quilt! have a great evening, Kaye

A lovely Spring Day - NOT

I drove through Sardine Canyon a @ 8 a.m. today and I was nervous. I am not happy driving in a snow storm. I had to attend a shop hop meeting in Salt Lake at Elaines Quilt Block. Our plans are well underway - It is going to be a great event again this year. We are all busy working on the blocks - some are a little challenging for me - but the quilts are always fun when they are done. I have one our fundraisers already in the shop - Chocolate Chip Cookies - and they are yummy. You can contribute to to our event by purchasing a cookie for $1.50. Mark the dates for shop hop so you can be sure to participate - June 17, 18, 19, & 20. The web site for shop hop is still under a bit of construction, but should be ready in the next 2 weeks. I went up to Preston Idaho with friends last night to the opening of Kathy Thomas' new quilt shop - "Suppose- a Quilt Boutique" She and her daughter have done a very good job in putting together this shop -they a nice assortment of fabrics. First Day of Spring

What a beautiful day it is too. I just got back from teaching at the Needles & Friends retreat - not a real big crowd, but a fun one. I think quilters are the happiest people - especially when you are sewing with friends. There was a group being taught to knit by Rita from Yarn Today - they were having a great time. There was a delightful trunk show from Linda Hansen and then members of the guild showed off some of their wonderful old quilts - some real treasures. The ladies were then going to have some technique classes and Leisa Firth was doing cute wool pincushions. I wish I could have stayed - but duty calls. Our retreat classes are doing real well - it is pretty exciting. Tomorrow, Saturday March 21 is National Quilt Day - so give yourself a wonderful gift to celebrate the day - sew! I think I will have to have some kind of a surprise sale for the day. Enjoy the sunshine - it may snow and have a nice weekend. Kaye

I thought I would let everyone know that may be interested in the "Folk Art Primer" class that Shanna is teaching - she has done a totally different color scheme than pictured. It has a tan background - the Moda Prairie cloth, and the appliques are done in shades of rosie red, greens and aquas for the bird. It is wonderful! If you don't want to use our kit, the class will be $20.

Kiss me - I'm Irish ! Not really - a German mix of some sort!!! My master was just here - my web master that is - he is putting the available pictures and info for the Spring Break retreat on the web site - you will even be able to print off a registration form - it just excites me to be part of this modern technology stuff. It has been fun for me to see how anxious people are to participate with this event - I thank you all. I will be taking down the wonderful trunk show of Debi Hillyard next week - please try to come by the shop and see it - she has wonderful things. There has been a lot of interest in her embroidered and pieced quilts. I have located one of them --"A Quilters Journey" from distribution company in New Zealand. They are pretty spendy and pretty cute too. I will be ordering some soon. We received a few new books from Martingale - "Fig Tree Quilts-Fresh Vintage" , "Remembering Adelia" quilts from the 1800's. and "Easy Applique Blocks" a little something for everyone. You may need them in your library. I prepared a Corn beef and Cabbage dinner for my family yesterday ( they love it) my contribution to the holiday. Monday and it is snowing again!

I think 6" is enough for today - don't you??? I am glad to have Zephie and Mary back to work today. We have all been sick and missing work. Hopefully they are on the road to recovery! Cough cough- sniff sniff. My friend Mariann -(she is a genius on the computer) has made the registration form you will all need to start signing up for "Spring Break in the Hamptons". I hope the variety of classes will please everyone! I will try to have pictures on the website in a few days. You can always stop by the shop and see the patterns. I am looking forward to this fun event- lots of prizes to be given away- hopefully I will be able to pull it off! Following dinner that evening, we will all be treated to a delightful trunk show presented by Leslie Bergeson - such a talented quilter. Have a great day - must get back to work, Kaye

Wednesday - Feb 25

Hi - My dog, Frank, ran away from the shop yesterday - woof - he was found and taken home by a nice lady. She notified my vet whose name was on his rabbi tag and they gave her my number so she could reach me. Thank you to Mary Davis and Lisa Firth who helped me search for him. My employee, Mary Christensen, has just about had a nervous breakdown over the incident. But all is well, he is home safe and sound and I have taken away a few of his privilege's for now. After my husband passed away, Frank would go wandering the neighborhood - I think he was looking for him. Isn't it amazing how attached we are to our animals - so much unconditional love. Back to quilting - I still have all fabric 20% off - including fat quarters - through the month of February. It is another beautiful day and we must take the time to sew, because before you know it we will all want to be outside digging in the dirt. We have officially started our Shop Hop quilt for the shop - it is going to be a lot of work. The girls stayed late last night with me and "volunteered" their sewing skills to complete some of the blocks. It will be a way cute quilt! Off to work, have a great week, Kaye
